Hi, my name is Tim Kearney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019ve spent most of my life making things– or thinking about making things, which is not always the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the years, I\u2019ve written and published more than 20 books, co-written two musicals, worked on short fiction, comedy, tabletop roleplaying games, podcasts, and plenty of other creative projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of those projects came together beautifully. Others stalled, changed shape, or taught me exactly what not to do next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Make Exist grew out of everything I learned along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is a place for practical tools, tutorials, experiments, and honest conversations about creative work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s for writers, artists, musicians, designers, and anyone else trying to take something that currently exists only in their mind and make it real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because having ideas is wonderful– but ideas alone are not finished work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I love the mysterious parts of creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I love the sudden idea that appears while you are driving, taking a shower, or trying to fall asleep. I love the moment when two unrelated thoughts collide and become something neither of them could have become alone. I love that strange feeling when a character surprises you or a project begins revealing what it wants to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I do not want to explain those things away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I also do not believe the creative process has to remain completely mysterious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Making things involves skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It involves habits, tools, decisions, systems, and problems that can be identified and improved. Inspiration matters, but so do project design, process, physical and emotional sustainability, and the ability to finish what you begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal of Make Exist is to understand the science of making things without draining away the magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You will not find one perfect creative process here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I do not have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, I operate according to what I call my current best approach<\/strong>: what I believe works right now, given what I know right now, based on the projects I have completed, the mistakes I have made, and the experiments I have tried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That approach will change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It should change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n A tool that helps me today may eventually wear down, become unnecessary, or be replaced by something better. A method that does not fit me might be exactly what another creator needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I will show you the tools I am currently using, explain what they do, and tell you where they have helped– or failed– me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You can test them, modify them, discard them, or add them to your own creative toolshed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The objective is not to make you dependent on my process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is to help you build one of your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finished projects have a way of lying by omission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After something is completed, we remember the breakthroughs, the dramatic setbacks, and the satisfying final result. <\/p>\n\n\n\n We forget the ordinary afternoons, the wrong turns, the awkward drafts, the lost files, the changing plans, and the hundreds of small decisions that actually produced the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Make Exist will not only examine finished products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I want to document the middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That means sharing ideas before I completely understand them. It means walking through creative problems while I am still solving them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It means admitting when a tool is not working, when a project needs to change, or when I simply do not feel like doing the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Creativity is often polished in public, but it is earned in private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I want this site to show more of what happens in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The exact shape of Make Exist will continue to evolve, but you can expect practical material about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some posts will be detailed tutorials.
